What is XL?

XL Ministries, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting eXcellence in Leadership through quality Christian training. It was started in 1992 by three youth pastors who had seen a number of men quit or fail in the ministry, in part attributed to poor or incomplete training. Although many of these men had seminary or Bible school education, they did not have sufficient hands-on training to deal with the difficulty and complexity of working in the church. The founders of XL Ministries, Inc. realized that “hands-on” training would be very beneficial to those who are pursuing ministry, as long as it is supervised by an experienced pastor. In this way interns can be exposed to the rigors, failures and triumphs of ministry in an environment that is protective of both the interns and the people with whom they work.

Most internships of this type last about three months – a time barely sufficient to be oriented in a church, much less be involved in multiple aspects of ministry. A two-year program was proposed: one year to watch and work with the pastor in the particular area of ministry that is being pursued, and the second year to individually oversee much of the ministry. Thus, the basic structure of XL Ministries, Inc. began to take shape.

In the first three years, XL Ministries, Inc. completed a youth pastor training manual, developed an intense two-year training program, began training a number of interns and developed a computer bulletin board that provided a variety of resources. Currently XL Ministries has developed over fifty resources and provides internship training in Youth Ministry, Children’s Ministry, Pastoral Ministry and Missions.

The concept of training pastors within the context of the local church is presented throughout Scripture and is summed up in 2 Timothy 2:2:

“The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” NASB

All of the internships include training in biblical theology, systematic theology, and practical theology. Interns are required to acquire a significant number of resources over their two years of training and they have a broad range of responsibilities within the area of ministry they are pursuing. The Pastor who oversees the internship provides regular guidance and evaluation in each area of ministry where the intern serves.

Those of us involved in XL Ministries, Inc. by no means think we have learned all there is to know about God or about ministry. It is a joy for each of us to continue to grow in our relationship with the Lord. We are exceedingly grateful for God’s Word, His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

Internship training for men is by far the most important focus of XL Ministries, Inc. We clearly see the need to provide intense and thorough internships for men who believe God is calling them into ministry. We have developed a two-year internship program for such men.

This internship program includes Bible study, Scripture memory, theological training, general reading and writing assignments, as well as involvement in virtually every aspect of ministry. The intern’s involvement in every area is carefully and formally evaluated. The first year the intern works under the very close direction of the specific pastor who is overseeing the ministry. During the second year he has many opportunities to be “in charge” of various aspects of ministry, while remaining under the pastor’s supervision.

Following the successful completion of the internship, we provide a recommendation and ongoing encouragement as the intern seeks full-time ministry opportunities. It is our desire that those who graduate from the program will be committed to providing training opportunities for others.

Applications for the internship program are available from XL Ministries, Inc. The application includes a detailed list of requirements for successful completion. The men who apply must be in agreement with our doctrinal statement. Interns are able to work during the training. There is generally no financial remuneration during their training. There is a requirement to acquire resources during the two years, totaling about $1,000.

Pastors are welcome to apply to provide the XL Ministries, Inc. Internship Training. A personal commitment to the Lord, to the local church, and to ministry is essential. The church where the internship takes place must also be supportive of this program. All interns proposed for a church are presented to the church leadership for their approval.

It is essential that the church has a pastor who directly oversees and evaluates the intern. Please contact XL Ministries if you are interested in applying as an intern or applying to provide internship training in your church. We will provide information for your consideration.

As you might expect, a person’s perception of life as a pastor does not always match the realities of ministry. This is not to minimize the thrill it is to serve the Lord. At the same time, there are many complexities in the ministry that may be unexpected.

We refer to the first year in ministry as the honeymoon period. You are excited to work with people and the church is excited to have someone who loves the Lord and desires to serve within the church. As time goes on, people get used to having a pastor. The pats on the back may come less often. You find out that everyone does not appreciate nor agree with your particular style of ministry, and that the Board may not always approve your particular requests. In the midst of it all, it is easy to get discouraged.

It can also be very difficult for a minister who is working with minimal staff. The responsibilities to teach every week, spend time with people, develop a leadership staff, meet with leaders and counsel can be overwhelming. At this point, many men find it appealing to either quit the ministry or move to another church where they can start the honeymoon period over.

We have a desire to help pastors in both the joys and sorrows of ministry. We do not pretend to have all of the answers, but we do believe that God’s Word is sufficient for everything we face in this life. We will gladly pray and offer counsel and resources for those who would desire help. We are available; click HERE to contact us. We also offer an annual training conference for those committed to both pastoral ministry as well as lay leadership.

Most youth ministries across the United States continue to be led by volunteer staff. Without the service and sacrifice of volunteer youth leaders, the effectiveness of youth ministry in America would be significantly reduced. The challenge for our volunteers is to balance their personal walk with the Lord, their family, their job, and their ministry. The unending list of “TO DOs” can become overwhelming.

XL Ministries is available to provide assistance and training for volunteer youth workers. We offer seminars that include such topics as:

  • Improving Your Teaching
  • Biblical Answers to Common Counseling Problems
  • Balancing Programming and Personal Relationships
  • We also provide information on multitudes of resources available to help the volunteer youth worker.

If you are beginning a youth ministry in your church, we would be willing to provide information on helpful resources, guidelines for recruiting leaders, guidelines for utilizing parents as volunteers, programming assistance, teaching helps, etc.

Seminars are available at cost. If you need assistance, but cannot afford to bring someone to your location, please do not hesitate to email for help. We will provide as much information as possible. Contact us HERE.

What We Believe

We believe the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men, and the Divine and final authority for all Christian faith and life.

We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins, according to the Scriptures. Further, He arose bodily from the dead and ascended into Heaven, where, at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Advocate.

We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, and during this age to convict men, regenerate, indwell, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for Godly living and service.

We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus Christ are born of the Holy Spirit and thus become forever the children of God.

We believe that man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and is therefore lost. Only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.

We believe that water baptism and the Lord’s supper are ordinances to be observed by the Church during the present age. They are, however, not to be regarded as means of salvation nor as channels of grace.

We believe that the true Church is composed of all such persons who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are united together in the body of Christ, of which He is the head.

We believe in the personal, premillennial and imminent coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and that this “Blessed Hope” has vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer.

We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead, of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord, of the unbeliever to judgement and everlasting conscious punishment.
